🏛️ Political Repercussions

Two Sandwell councillors — Danny Millard (Blackheath) and Claire Mayo (Rowley) — were suspended by the Labour Party following their arrests. Both were late attending the full Sandwell Council Meeting on Tuesday, July 22, we understand that they arrived halfway through, without apology, and left together as soon as the meeting ended.

Councillors Claire Mayo (Rowley) and Danny Millard (Blackheath) have both been suspended by the party.

The Labour Party issued a statement expressing deep concern:

“We are extremely concerned about this incident. Both Councillor Millard and Councillor Mayo were administratively suspended by the Labour Party immediately upon receipt of these allegations. Given this is subject to a police investigation we are not able to comment further at this time.”

Public outrage

This incident has caused public outrage with residents noting that this isn’t the first time Labour councillors in Sandwell have had brushes with the law for violent attacks.

Cllr Steve Melia during the assualt in 2021

Cllr Steve Melia, the current Mayor of Sandwell, was convicted of assaulting blogger Julian Saunders outside council offices in Oldbury on December 7, 2021. He pleaded guilty to assault by beating and was sentenced at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on February 10, 2022 to a 12-month conditional discharge.

Labour was critised early this year after they voted to appoint Melia as Mayor. The latest incident only intensifies the growing calls for stricter ethical standards and transparency within local government. Many residents are demanding a full review of councillor conduct policies and questioning the Labour Party’s internal oversight mechanisms.
