Two nursery workers have been jailed for a string of shocking child cruelty offences after CCTV footage revealed brutal assaults on children, some of whom had special needs, at a £2,000-a-month day care centre in West London.

Anbreen Tariq aged 45

Anbreen Tariq, 45, and Salima Fajal, 40, subjected three children to sustained physical abuse between March and July 2021. Footage from inside the nursery exposed disturbing scenes, including Fajal — a mother of four — grabbing a three-year-old girl by the arm and holding her in the air before slapping her twice.

Salima Fajal aged 40

The abuse only came to light when Fajal contacted the girl’s parents to report that their daughter’s nose was bleeding. Upon arriving at the nursery, they discovered the child also had a bruised eye and redness to her cheeks.

Police reviewed the CCTV footage and uncovered a harrowing pattern of abuse. However, both Fajal and Tariq deliberately deleted portions of the recordings, raising concerns that other children may also have been harmed.

The pair later turned on each other, keeping select footage to use as blackmail. Both pleaded guilty to multiple child cruelty charges at Isleworth Crown Court.

Among the most distressing evidence was a clip showing Tariq striking a non-verbal autistic boy, aged three, on the back of the head with a mobile phone and then kicking him. The boy was seen crying on the floor.

His father told the court:

“This had had a deep emotional and mental impact on my family. The way my wife and I found out was not ideal. The first we knew was when Fajal came into our office with someone pretending to be a whistleblower, who we know now is Tariq. My wife burst into tears when she saw the video. This has created a mistrust in institutions who are supposed to be looking after our child. My son could not tell us what was happening because he is autistic.”

Another disturbing clip showed Tariq aggressively restraining a two-year-old boy. The child’s mother described the emotional fallout:

“Absolutely distraught. For about six months after my son left the nursery, he did not want to be away from me. He would wake up, cry, and come to me.”

Fajal, who had worked in childcare for over two decades, attempted to justify her actions by claiming the child she slapped was “choking.” She pleaded guilty to two counts of child cruelty and received a suspended sentence. She was also ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to the child’s family and £1,630 in court costs.

Tariq admitted three counts of child cruelty and was sentenced to 12 months in prison.

In his damning conclusion, the presiding judge said:

“The CCTV is deeply distressing to watch. What is striking is how causal this violence was. The victim impact statements make for very sobering reading and speak to the profound effect relating to the abuse which the children suffered at the nursery. There was an entirely inappropriate use of force which would have undoubtedly caused these children serious distress, pain and discomfort. This was cruelty which you both casually subjected young and entirely innocent to, who were trusted to be in your care.”
