A Scottish Conservative politician and youth advocate has been convicted for possessing child sexual abuse material and extreme pornography, including images involving bestiality. Kyle Thornton, 30, who once held prominent roles in the Scottish Youth Parliament and Glasgow Conservatives, now faces public disgrace and legal consequences following his admission of guilt at Dumfries Sheriff Court.
Thornton was placed on the sex offenders register after pleading guilty to sending “grossly offensive” and “obscene” messages, as well as possessing disturbing images that court papers described as involving a man and an animal “engaged in sex.”
His fall from grace has sent shockwaves through political and youth advocacy circles. Thornton previously served as a councillor for Glasgow’s Newlands and Auldburn ward and was a regional list candidate for Holyrood. He also worked for Galloway MSP Finlay Carson and supported the 2014 campaign to extend voting rights to 16- and 17-year-olds.
A former associate from the Scottish Youth Parliament said:
“I met him a few times and always found him strange. When I heard what he’d been arrested for, I wasn’t surprised. Now he must face the full force of the justice system.”
Thornton’s conviction raises urgent questions about vetting procedures, safeguarding policies, and the responsibilities of political institutions to protect vulnerable communities. His prior involvement in youth-focused initiatives makes the revelations particularly disturbing.
Kyle Thornton’s full sentence hasn’t been disclosed by the courts—a glaring omission that raises serious concerns. For someone convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material and extreme pornography, the lack of transparency screams cover-up and undermines public trust in the justice system. Silence in cases like this doesn’t protect victims—it protects perpetrators.
