The Lambeth Green Party has issued a forceful call for the immediate resignation of Clapham Town Councillor Irfan Mohammed, following a court hearing that revealed disturbing sexual allegations against him.

On 27th August, Cllr Mohammed appeared at Inner London Crown Court to deny multiple charges, including sexual assault and coercive behaviour. Among the allegations are claims that he showed a woman homemade masturbation videos and engaged in controlling conduct.

In response, Lambeth Labour swiftly suspended Mohammed from its group, citing the gravity of the charges. He now sits as an independent councillor on the Lambeth Council website.

Cllr Nicole Griffiths, Green Party representative for Streatham St Leonard’s ward, expressed outrage:

“I felt appalled reading the sickening allegations. Elected Councillors are, quite rightly, expected to uphold a level of moral decency in their everyday lives. Irfan should stand down immediately due to the seriousness of these allegations. He should not continue as a Councillor if he can’t fulfil his duties and serve his Clapham Park constituents”.

A trial date has been set for 29th June 2026 and is expected to last seven days. Cllr Mohammed denies all charges.

Mohammed was elected in May 2022 as one of three Labour Co-op councillors for Clapham Town, securing 1,416 votes (59.2%). His colleagues Verity McGivern and Martin Tiedemann also won with strong majorities. Green candidates trailed significantly, with Joanna Eaves receiving 24%, Cath Potter 17.7%, and Myka-Neil Cooper-Levitan 16.9%.

However, the political tide may be shifting. The Green Party recently captured a Herne Hill seat from Labour in a by-election, hinting at growing support across Lambeth.

Labour is likely to resist calls for a by-election in Clapham Park, preferring to hold off until the next scheduled all-out elections in May 2026. But pressure is mounting, with the Greens urging Council leadership to act decisively.

This case not only raises serious questions about individual accountability but also underscores the broader expectations of integrity and transparency in public office. As the legal process unfolds, Lambeth residents and political observers alike will be watching closely.
