A Swansea man has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend’s five-month-old son in what the court described as a violent and rage-filled attack.

Thomas Morgan, 29, from Gorseinon, was found guilty of killing Jensen-Lee Dougal after shaking him so severely that he suffered devastating injuries to his brain, spine and eyes. Experts told the court the injuries were among the worst they had ever seen.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Jensen-Lee was being cared for by Morgan while his mother, Jordan Dougal, was at work on 30 March 2024. During that time, Morgan said the baby had been choking and claimed he had shaken him while trying to help. Medical specialists rejected that explanation, saying the injuries could only have been caused by extreme violence and not by resuscitation or rough handling.

Jensen-Lee was taken to hospital in Cardiff but died the following day in his mother’s arms after suffering catastrophic injuries.

The court was told Morgan continued to deny responsibility for more than a year and was not arrested until July 2025. He had attended the baby’s funeral and maintained that he was innocent until police gathered enough evidence to charge him.

Sentencing him, Mrs Justice Stacey said Jensen-Lee was an utterly defenceless baby and told Morgan that he had lied repeatedly to police and others since the child’s death. She said the fatal assault may have been brief, but it was forceful enough to cause extensive and fatal internal injuries.

The judge also referred to Morgan’s state of mind on the day of the attack, noting that he had been involved in a heated exchange of abusive WhatsApp messages with the mother of his own children for around 90 minutes before the incident.

Morgan was given a life sentence and ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years in prison.

In a statement read to the court, Jordan Dougal described the lasting impact of losing her son. She said she lives every day with overwhelming grief, trauma and pain and that she had effectively been given a life sentence of grief. She remembered Jensen-Lee as a happy baby who loved being cuddled and sung to.

She also spoke of the milestones he would never reach, saying she would never hear him say he loved her, call her mammy, take his first steps or start school.

The court heard that Jensen-Lee weighed just 12.5lb at the time of his death. As part of the medical evidence, jurors were told he suffered a subdural bleed, severe brain injury, retinal damage and fractures consistent with violent shaking.

Following the sentencing, NSPCC Cymru said the case was heartbreaking and highlighted how vulnerable babies and young children are because they depend entirely on adults for their care and protection.

The case has left Jensen-Lee’s family grieving the loss of a baby described as happy, loved and full of life, and has drawn renewed attention to the devastating consequences of child abuse.
