Case Summary:
On December 23rd, 1994, Tracey Mertens was abducted from her home in Birmingham, brutally beaten, and doused in petrol before being set alight in Eaton Churchyard, Cheshire. Despite suffering severe burns, Tracey survived long enough to describe her attackers before passing away in hospital.
Tracey’s murder has long been suspected to be linked to drug debts owed by her former partner, Joey Kavanagh. Shortly after her death, another couple who owed money for drugs received a chilling threat: “If you don’t pay up, you’ll get what Tracey Mertens got.”
Police hold DNA evidence related to the case, but no match has ever been found. Despite ongoing investigations and a £30,000 reward for information leading to a conviction, her killers have never been brought to justice.
As of 2025, Tracey’s family continues to seek answers, and her murder remains unsolved.

Amy Fitzpatrick

Judith Roberts

Carl Bridgewater

Billie-Jo Jenkins
